Waze App Blamed For Fatal Wrong Way Crash

ELIZABETH, NJ (1/25/2020) — Local authorities are currently investigating a fatal head-on collision that occurred on Saturday in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

A 2020 Chevy Silverado and a 2005 Honda Civic crashed into one another around 7:25 a.m.

Saturday morning on the northbound side of Route 1 and 9.

The driver of the Civic, Punkaj Shama, 29, died in the accident. According to Elizabeth spokeswoman Kelly Martins, the driver of the Silverado suffered minor injuries but refused medical treatment.

The driver of the Silverado told authorities that Waze told him to stay left on the fork of the road at the McClellan Street bridge, which put him in the wrong lane of the highway.

As of Tuesday, there have been no arrests or charges. Martins stated that Port Authority issued three citations for reckless driving, driving the wrong way, and driving while suspended. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be involved in the accident, but authorities have not confirmed this.

The accident is still under investigation. If anyone has any information about the crash, contact local law enforcement immediately.
