Franklin, NJ – A couple and their adult daughter were killed in an accident involving a tanking truck in South Jersey in the afternoon on Sunday, July 7.
According to authorities, Mariela Cardoso-Baez, 19, was driving her parents Jose Cardoso, 44, and Adriana Baez Mellado, 45, and her younger brother, 11, southbound on Lake Road. When they crossed the intersection, they were struck by a tanker entering the intersection.
The family’s car became trapped underneath the tanker’s cab as the two vehicles skidded off the road. Cardoso-Baez and her parents were pronounced dead at the scene, while her 11-year-old brother was transported to Cooper University Hospital for emergency surgery. The truck driver was also taken to the hospital with head and neck pain.
Police have confirmed that the truck had the right of way, where stop signs are posted on Lake Road only. However, the crash remains under investigation. A police spokesman stated that it took more than two hours to pull the victims from the wreckage.
