Midnight Crash During Pursuit Seriously Injures Summit Police Officer

SUMMIT, NJ (4/22/2020) - A Summit police officer now requires extensive surgery after being struck by a stolen vehicle during a pursuit Tuesday morning. The crash happened 12:16 a.m. at the intersection of Morris Avenue and Lower Overlook Road.

According to Summit Police Capt. Andrew Bartolotti, 31-year-old Officer Anthony Pyzik, a three-year veteran of the force, was monitoring the pursuit of a stolen vehicle from a nearby town.

Pyzik was driving east on Morris Avenue to intercept the stolen car, which was heading west. When the driver of the stolen car, 18-year-old Walleed Wheeler, saw Pyzik he crossed over into the eastbound lanes, striking the officer’s vehicle head-on.

Officer Pyzik was rushed to Morristown Medical Center and is in serious condition. The Summit Police Department says he received several lacerations on his head, requiring 15 stitches. He also requires surgery to repair fractures in his hip, femur, and wrist.

The two men in the stolen vehicle were arrested at the scene immediately following the crash. Wheeler was charged with 2nd degree eluding, 2nd degree aggravated assault on a police officer, 3rd degree possession of heroin, and 3rd degree receiving stolen property. His passenger, 20-year-old Dante Brown, was charged with 3rd degree receiving stolen property.

An official fundraiser was set up by Summit PBA to help Officer Pyzik’s family with medical costs. You can make a donation directly to Pyzik’s family here.
