Loose Tire Wreaks Havoc on Route 440

Edison, NJ— A wayward dump truck tire blasted down the highway Wednesday on Route 440, hitting and seriously damaging a moving vehicle.

John Rice, a police officer in Piscataway, was driving in another vehicle behind a car carrying his wife Allison and their three young children when they saw the oncoming tire.

“Initially I thought, please don’t hit my wife, my wife’s in the car in front of me, three kids in the car and that was going through my head, please don’t hit her,” said Rice.

The runaway tire first clipped his wife’s car before it slammed into her husband’s jeep.

“I thought it was going to come right through my windshield,” Allison said.

Video shows heavy damage to Rice’s Jeep, which included serious front end damage, a missing hood and windshield.  Fortunately, Rice was not injured in the accident.

Police would like to hear from anyone with more information about the accident. We will update this post as more information becomes available.
