12 Injured After Truck Falls Off Palisade Avenue Overpass and Overturns Near Lincoln Tunnel

A serious accident involving an overturned trash truck left 12 people injured. In the afternoon on Wednesday, July 3, a truck belonging to Union City Department of Public Works lost control and hit three cars before crossing over the Palisade Avenue overpass onto Route 495.

Eyewitness reports obtained by CBS New York suggest that the driver of the truck lost control perhaps because the truck’s brakes failed. Others noted that the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed.

In an interview with the driver of the truck, Eulalio Diaz, he said the truck accelerated and that he couldn't control it, though he never accidentally hit the accelerator.

Diaz said that he aimed for the fence on the overpass because he thought it might stop the out-of-control truck and he didn’t want to hit any cars or people.

The 12 injured people, including the driver, were transported to area hospitals and treated in stable conditions, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

An investigation is still ongoing into the exact cause of the crash.
